Bobby Tarantino III is Logic's eighth mixtape. Released on July 30, 2021, it features an appearance from the American actress Cynthia Erivo, who is featured on the sixth track, titled "Inside". BT3 also sees the return of Logic's Young Sinatra persona and Dwn2earth on the fourth track, "My Way"; Bobby Tarantino III serves as the fourth (fifth if counting Everybody) and final installment in the Bobby Tarantino series.

BT3 is Logic's third project of 2021, following Planetory Destruction (in which Logic masqueraded as the mysterious Doc D) and YS Collection, Vol. 1 (his debut compilation album that contained a collection of songs from the original three Young Sinatra (series) mixtapes). The album/mixtape is preceded by four singles: "Vaccine" (July 2), "Get Up" (July 9), "My Way" (July 16), and "Call Me" (July 23). Though "untitled" received its own cover art from Jose Fernandez, it was not an official single.

Timeline of the Bobby Tarantino series[]

The first installment of the Bobby Tarantino series, Bobby Tarantino, was released in 2016 and featured Logic sitting in a green sofa chair, with a painting in the background as well as two small Greek columns on either side of him, giving a slightly intimidating, although determined, vibe. Bobby Tarantino II continues the storyline in 2018 on the planet Paradise, informing the listener that Logic, now sitting in the back of a nondescript sportscar, is 85 miles from the city of Paradise. His hand is heavily bandaged, presumably after pummeling his enemies in a Kill Bill-esque conflict on the first mixtape.

As Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was originally going to be called Bobby Tarantino III, the fanbase considers it to be a part of the series. As Logic's car crashed on the cover of BT3, it can be stated that the cover of COADM displays Logic's soul leaving his body at the moment of impact. This can then lead to Everybody, which Logic's soul ascended briefly as Logic reflects on his life. He, after a period of time, returns to the realm of the living, where the body he had has burned up, leaving a mummified form as Logic crawls back out of the ground near the still-burning crash site.

The cover designed by Sam Spratt for BT3 is also symbolic of Logic's "return" to the music industry, though it is understood that his claim of retiring was merely a ploy to get out of his contract with Def Jam. On the album, Logic announces on "God Might Judge" that BT3 is his last project with Def Jam and that he plans to go independent afterwards.

Release and promotion[]

On July 2, 2021, Logic released "Vaccine", in which he rapped, "Ready to fuck up the game, BT3, now we at it again, man", teasing the release of Bobby Tarantino III. After the single's release, he also tweeted about the existence of the mixtape.[1] He then revealed the release date and cover art on July 26, 2021.[2]

Bobby Tarantino III (2018 Version)[]

Originally, Bobby Tarantino III was supposed to be released in 2018 (in addition to being the original version of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind). However, it was then scrapped and, until 2021, thought to be a project that would not be released.

In 2021, a user named "Viper" sent the tracklist for the original version of Bobby Tarantino III on THESOURCE2.TO. Earlier on, in the summer of 2020, tracks for the original mixtape were leaked in a mass leak of Logic tracks online.

Original tracklist[]

  1. Keanu Reeves
  2. Self Esteem
  3. Day Date
  4. COMMANDO (feat. G-Eazy)
  5. Rap and Get Money
  6. Flawless
  7. Show Love
  8. Legacy Records
  9. Take Out (feat. YG)
  10. God Might Judge

Notes[]

  • "Keanu Reeves" and "COMMANDO" were released as originally recorded on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
  • A track titled "Show Love" appeared on Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, though it was not the same as the one that would have appeared on the 2018 version of Bobby Tarantino III.
  • "Flawless" was released unchanged on the 2021 version of Bobby Tarantino III.
  • The title "God Might Judge" was reused for a different track that made it onto the final version of Bobby Tarantino III.

Throwaways[]

Fifteen tracks were thrown out, put on the backburner, renamed, or recycled after the original Bobby Tarantino III. Some of the tracks themselves made it to Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Bobby Tarantino III, while simply the names of the recorded tracks were reused.

Trivia[]

The song "Theme For The People" contained Logic's minute-and-a-half "GO STUPID REMIX" from Logic's unreleased mixtape version of Ultra 85 with different vocals. "God Might Judge", though having the same name as a song that was on the original tracklist, is a different song in its entirety.

As BT3 is Logic's last mixtape with Def Jam Recordings, he decided to explicitly make it a "for fun" project and not a serious project like the rest of his works.
